The original Petey was an American Pit Bull Terrier named Pal,
the Wonder Dog. Pal got his start as Tige in the Buster
Brown series
in the 1920s. It was during this time that he acquired the circled eye. Maksymilian Faktorowicz, who founded Max Factor & Company in Los Angeles, drew the circle. When he was recruited to
appear in the Our
Gang comedies
later that year, Hal Roach simply left it on, creating one of the most recognized dogs in film history.
Carl was dubbed “Alphalfa,” which later morphed into “Alfalfa.” After leaving the series in 1940, he was the victim of typecasting and struggled to find roles. He
appeared in bit parts and B movies as an adult.
Leaving show business, he became a American Pit Bull Terrier dog breeder and hunting guide. In January 1959, Switzer met an untimely end as he was fatally shot during a
fight over $50 and a American Pit Bull Terrier hunting dog.
Sergeant Stubby (1916 or
1917 – March 16, 1926) was a dog who was the official mascot of the 102nd Infantry Regiment (United States), assigned to the 26th (Yankee) Division. He served for 18 months and participated in seventeen
battles on the Western Front. He saved his regiment from surprise mustard gas attacks, found and comforted the wounded, and once caught a German soldier by the seat of his
pants, holding him there until American soldiers found him.] His actions were well-documented in contemporary American
newspapers.
Stubby has been called the most decorated war dog of World War I, and the only dog to be nominated for rank and then promoted to sergeant through combat,[5]
a claim having no official documentary evidence, but recognized in connection with an exhibition at the Smithsonian Institution.[5][2][3]
Sgt. Stubby is the subject of a 2018 animated film.
